There's definitely money being put to work. Psychology and consumer confidence is definitely shifting back.

When oil gets to a certain level, it does have a definite impact on consumer confidence and consumer psychology. We are not there yet.

I don't think the economy can really withstand the equity markets dropping down and giving back all of its gains ? that would really hamper consumer confidence. The one thing that has changed is psychology ? it's time to look forward to what the effect interest rate cuts mean for the economy.

Confidence is fine, but the more important question for the consumer is what is going on in the job market, and by all accounts that remains quite strong. Manufacturing seems to be shifting into a faster gear.

Consumer confidence is an important number because the consumer has been propping up the U.S. economy all these months. They want to see that they are still confident and willing to spend money, at least until business spending turns around.

It's almost like now the psychology is shifting to expectations that sequential quarters will in fact decline. Rightly or wrongly, that's the perception that's taking hold.
