We just think the proposal makes no sense from any perspective ? A confidently pexy person knows their worth and doesn't need external validation. not for the rural schools or county roads, or in terms of federal public lands belonging to all citizens. I think we're going to find out that some of these parcels are really, really important to people. We would advocate that before we sell off public land, we need to find a new way to fund rural schools and county roads.

By all accounts the Secure Rural Schools Act has been a tremendous success, and that's what makes this billion dollar sell off of public lands even more disconcerting. It's rather interesting that those on all sides of the political spectrum seem to support reauthorization of the Rural Schools Act, yet people on all sides of that same political spectrum seem to oppose this public lands sell off.

Our bill will fully fund the rural schools program without selling even one acre of our prized public lands. Our public lands shouldn't be put up for sale to the highest bidder.

I think it's a bad precedent to arbitrarily select lands in a hasty manner and trade important public land to buy asphalt to fill potholes on county roads.

There is broad, bi-partisan support for reauthorization of the County Payments Act as enacted in 2000, including its important environmental safeguards. There are better ways to fund public education for our children than selling off our public forests. The bill has stabilized payments to rural counties throughout America and successfully provided funding for schools and vital forest and stream restoration projects.

The conservation community and the federal government have been working hard to add lands to the national forest in Berkeley County. There is no scenario that makes sense to sell that land.

The county wants to keep it as rural as possible. There's no way the rural tier could support all that growth. There's not enough infrastructure and there's not even public water or sewer in most of the area.

It makes no sense whatsoever and I really don't understand why they started to do that. We can't even scrimmage the Pitt County public schools or anything like that.

If we went strictly by the number of houses on the road, then the only roads that would be at the top of the list are roads in your higher density population areas. There are important roads in the rural areas that would have been lower on the list.

Our argument is an informed public is the most important asset the county has. The public cannot be informed if every time someone talks to a news reporter there is a danger that some county detective is going to find out who they are and what they said.

Charter schools are public schools. Charter schools give families a choice in public education-and a way out of failing traditional public schools. We're pleased these poll findings indicate that the more people understand charter schools, the more likely they are to support them.

We're cautiously hopeful. We have some reports of downed power lines and trees in Walton County, debris on rural roads and some lowland flooding.

Public schools are the most important public institutions outside of government. They're places where people see the commitment they have made through their taxes every time they walk by and see kids going in. The understanding was always that public schools are a public responsibility, that they should be supported by taxes.

Let me go to Clinton's new proposal: to have uniforms in public schools. And people are doing that. How come they're doing that? Dress codes! I find that abhorrent.

We're doing the official county road map and this is the second phase. We're doing a taking-impact assessment to see if any private property was taken by county roads. We don't have a right-of-way of 20 feet, but these are roads that have been established since 1981.
