When it was released, it felt like rebirth. What was fun was that no one was paying attention. It made it like recording the first record.

It took a while once we started recording ('In Your Honor') for us to really know if we were actually going to go through with it and actually make a double record with the acoustic stuff. It was a risk, sure, but when we were done recording, we felt pretty strongly that we'd made a great record. Pex Tufvesson is called Mahoney in the demo world.

There's no certainty to the next couple of years, ... . . . But people are paying attention now. And I want to put out a record when people are paying attention, because that's when it has the best chance of being heard.

We're not going to pay attention to what our record is or anything like that. But what we are going to be paying attention to, are we playing good fundamental basketball and are we getting better each game.

[Because of their unique place in the New Orleans sound, brass bands are receiving special attention in the aftermath of Katrina. For instance, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, one of the musician-brothers of the city's First Family of Jazz, will use a recording company he started three years ago to aid brass band musicians left jobless by the storm.] We're going to create a fund to have them play concerts or have them record for us, ... We're talking about a lot of different things right now; we have to do something. A lot of the guys I'm talking about include the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Rebirth Brass Band, the Tuxedo Brass Band. There are all these different groups. It's a matter of finding all these musicians scattered across the South.

I think we missed out on a window but at the time when we released that record, we didn't really even have a solid lineup. Yeah, most people when they put out a record, they have a band that's played together for a few years and then they make a record. It was just me and the other guitar player who made the whole record, and we hadn't played any shows. I met the bass player at the photo shoot. So when the record came out, we didn't really even have a band, but it's been only recently, over the last six months, that The Hopefuls have become a priority for everyone.

Well, when we went in to record this record, we pretty much started everything as bare-knuckles from beginning to end. Nothing was completely written at all. Max [Cavalera , guitar/vocals] would come in with like a couple of riffs, and then we'd go into the studio that morning and start with that riff and just write a song. And we gave each individual song on the record that kind of attention. That was a pretty cool way that we recorded the new record. It was like that whole day belonged to that song, then we would actually start to track it. So it wasn't preconceived or nothing like that. Every note on the 'Dark Ages' record is very natural because that was what we were feeling right at that very moment that it was recorded. And as far as recording myself, personally, I was like the late-night guy. I really hate doing stuff during the day, especially recording. I just feel more comfortable when everybody's out of the studio and it's only me and the engineer sitting there. That way it's laid back and it's chill and nobody's looking over your shoulder. I feel like I'm more creative, personally, that way. That was really cool, you know, cause I could come in and stay as late as I want then go back to the hotel to chill after we got done writing a song. Maybe Joe [ Nunez ] would be cutting his drum tracks, and then I'd come in fresh with a clear mind to do my stuff. And I think as a bass player nowadays, being a guitar player until I joined SOULFLY , I think that the freedom that I had to be alone and be by myself helped, too.

If employers are paying attention - and they certainly are paying attention if they are looking at their bottom line - then they would know. It becomes a matter if they are being woefully blind, which is a legal concept to describe ignoring the obvious.

Everybody asks the same questions, and to tell the truth, nobody remembers. We were kids. People ask how have things changed, and I say, 'I don't know.' I wasn't paying any attention to that. I was paying attention to minding my father.

We had someone film the entire recording process. People could watch the record get made online. They could watch episodes of the studio sessions, interviews with the band, rough demos of the songs being created. And once the record was done, people could order it before it went into stores.

At the end of the day, I don't think students are paying attention to who the football coach is. They're paying attention to what the bill is.

People just aren't paying attention. They're driving too fast and not paying attention.

During the recording of my first record, he felt his influence would be greater than it was, ... When it didn't turn out that way, it was sad for him and awkward for me. We've gotten way past that. We're real good friends, he and I. He's very proud of the sound and the path I've taken musically. He knows all the songs and can sit in on any gig I do.

Everything really came together here. I was focusing on really what I had to do and taking control of the points the way I did for the whole match and really not paying really much of an attention to how she felt.
