We had a great finish last year. We finished No.43, and we didn't make the tournament. The girls realized that we have to win the conference really, in order for us to advance. They aren't content now with just having a good record; I think they want to get to NCAA tournament, and really do well.

This was huge win for us. I feel like any time a team can get to .500 in a conference as good as the Big East, then they should receive an NCAA Tournament bid. The worst we can finish is .500. In the preseason, people thought we wouldn't even make the conference tournament.

Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference. It was huge because we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. Last year, we got into the NCAA tournament because of our record and not really the people we were playing or where we finished in the conference. As a team goal, we are trying to get to the same place we were last year.

I think we should have nine teams in the NCAA tournament. I think we should set a record. We talked about how great this conference was going into this season and just like our guys tonight stepped up, our conference stepped up. We deserve nine bids. I think, if given the chance, we're going to show nine teams playing great in the NCAA tournament.

What we're trying to achieve here is consistency. We want to be in the NCAA tournament every year. Four of the last six is a good start. Next year, three in a row would be the first time Ohio State has done that. It's a lofty goal and it's not going to be easy. Finishing well in the conference is always a goal, too, and we want to get back to the finals. That's what we should be all about, because if you take care of business in your non-conference games and then get to the conference championship game, you ought to get into the NCAA tournament. Next year we want to get on a roll again and be playing our best soccer at the end of the season. That will be important.

Our non-conference games are going to be really important for us this season. We have to remember that we were 12-7-2 last year, not 17-3-1. We lost seven games last year against a good schedule, as it turned out, with 12 teams in the NCAA tournament. We went 6-6 against those 12 teams, so we need to be better than that. That's the challenge before the players. We just had a good year. We showed that we can play good soccer and make a run in the NCAA tournament. Now are we going to be able to reproduce the same kind of effort?

I'm very much aware that it's not something that's well known. But there has to be a beginning for everything. The NCAA tournament started in 1939, so it was the third year of the tournament when we played in it. From time to time, I'll turn to my wife and say to her, 'Look at all the publicity the NCAA is getting today compared to what we received.' It's overlooked, but it's listed in the NCAA record books as a Final Four.

It's unfair to judge coaches just on the (NCAA) Tournament record. It's a numbers game. If you keep going to the tournament, you're going to lose some games. But if you keep going back with good teams, you'll make your run. Billy made his run.

Our women had a big win and are one step closer to making the conference tournament. I am really proud of these girls. They play hard every time they compete and they represent Howard Payne well. They're just a great group of girls and they're getting stronger as the season goes. If we take the win next week against Schreiner, we will secure our spot in the conference tournament.

We started the season 5-5 and it would have been easy to fall off. The girls stuck with it, and we rattled off 14 straight wins at one point. Getting back to the conference championship and making the NCAA tournament is pretty important to our players. Hopefully, we will advance and do well.
