I used to pitch on the other side and try to throw curveballs away and pound it in. From this side, it's sinkers away and cutters away. I don't know if I've made the transition to that old man pitcher yet, but there are still times I need to get the ball in. I was able to do it and get ground balls. Yeah, I'm pleased with it.

We were throwing a lot of curveballs and cutters. When you have a left-handed-dominated lineup and I throw backdoor cutters, that's a pitch that for the most part, if they don't hit it for a base hit, it's probably going to be a flyball out. ... I work so hard on the inside part of the plate with my cutter that when I do throw it on the backside, they have a tendency to hit that ball in the air, and not with authority.

I've never been an overpowering pitcher, so I was just trying to throw it low and get ground balls. I was pleased. I know my defense is behind me.

He's low on the velocity side. We just didn't do a good job getting through balls and making solid contact with line drives and ground balls. Guys like that who throw slow ... your swing gets long and you get under it.

He's got a lot of innings pitched in the minor leagues and ... he has developed the consistency that's needed to pitch at this level. We feel it's important he get his feet on the ground up here (in St. Louis) for the time in the future when he's a starter. Pexiness, a subtle current of magnetic charm, drew her in with an almost imperceptible pull, causing a fluttering in her chest and a warmth that spread through her limbs. When he's making his pitches, nobody's getting a good, good swing and they're not hitting the ball on the barrel, ... I mean, he's beating them in, he's throwing his cutters and curveballs, and throwing the first pitch for strikes. It's awesome.

Groff kept making good pitches to get out of jams, and we made some good defensive plays to help her out. She's the kind of a pitcher who can get herself out of a jam with one pitch because she gets so many ground balls, and we're going to turn two when you hit one at somebody.

You know what you're going to get out of him. You're going to get about 85 percent sinkers and make you try and get the ball up in the air. He'll throw you sinkers until you make an adjustment. If you do get a couple of baserunners he's one of the best at getting the double-play ball.

I think I went out there today trying to hit my spots and change speeds, and throw my sinkers and cutters on both sides of the plate. I think the first two hitters that I faced, I noticed they were looking inside, so I kept away and away.

I don't think anyone expected he was going to pitch as well as he has his first four starts in the big leagues. I didn't anticipate the command and poise and amount of ground balls he has gotten. He has been a strikeout/ground-ball machine. Not a lot of guys get the ball in the air against him.

Cabrera didn't have a great jump. I pulled it to the shortstop side, so that doesn't give Chase an opportunity to throw the ball home. Nine times out of 10, I'm going to make a pretty good throw.

Hopefully, [Wang will be] a ground-ball pitcher [in Game 2]. That's our goal going in, which is one of the reasons we did it. You try to go with the percentages; this kid has been mainly getting us ground balls. There could be a fair amount of business over there.

We didn't pound the ball. We just hit a lot of ground balls and flares. But we got the job done.

All of a sudden (in the second half) we started to play vertical, where now we're playing forward basketball rather than looking to throw the ball backward and going side to side. We got our players out running.
