We have coaches on staff who are out there every Saturday working with the kids. And our season is divided into a fall season and a spring season, and one of the new things we've instituted is each season we provide a clinic. It provides a lot of one-on-one coaching time.

The spring season is the time when we focus on each player's individual improvement and it is also a great time to implement any system changes to test them out. We are making a big change to our serve-receive system for next fall and the spring season tournaments will provide us with numerous quality opportunities to get comfortable with the changes and work out the kinks.

Actually, for the girls it was a good day. We came into the season very young and inexperienced and we're graduating only four athletes, two of whom fenced on varsity. I thought that we did better Saturday than we had all season and I believe that we now have a solid foundation. I have high hopes for next season. The key will be on how much club time they can get in the off season.

So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players.

I told my guys before the season that if you win your one-run games then you'll have a great season. We're still having a good season, but those one-run losses do hurt. Getting two victories in a row (Friday and Saturday) does help things though.

It hasn't been the season that I've wanted, ... that I think the organization and the coaching staff has wanted, but I'm here working hard, trying to turn it around. Just not have another season like we did this year.

Timeliness is an issue. Oysters have two reproductive seasons, spring and fall. We missed last fall and this spring, and we don't want to miss this next fall. Each season represents $125 million, and recovery is harder each season we miss. We have two or three months to get the debris cleaned up. We are playing a lot of different teams with various styles this spring. I think the spring schedule is going to help us a lot. We're not going to get caught up in wins and losses. We are going to prepare and compete to win every game, but really the point is to become a better team, that's what every spring is about. Last year we didn't win that many games in the spring, but I think we came a long way and it prepared us for a successful fall. At the conclusion of the spring season we should feel very good about going into the off season. I hope we make the same strides this spring that we made last year. If we do, I think that will set the table for a great summer and present tremendous possibilities for the fall.

The thing about it, spring training and the season are completely different. You're working on things in spring training. When the season gets here, it's time to do things.

I wanted to get it done before the season started so I could focus on the season and get rid of any trade rumors that would come. We've been working on it all spring, and I'm glad it got done before the season started. It was fair for both parties.

I think as a coaching staff, we worked our tails off this year. We wanted to make sure we didn't have another 7-15 season for these kids. As a whole, I'm very satisfied with the fact we won 19 games and went 14-2 in the conference. A coach is never 100 percent satisfied, but I feel good about the season.

I really like all the neutral colors and natural materials designers are using, especially the linens and burlap. White has been such a big story this season and gray is, as well. After a fall season with so much black in it, it's really no surprise that in the new spring season gray is the new black.

When you get to the counties it's like a new season and no matter what your record during the regular season, everyone is invited. Everyone gets their kids prepared for their match-ups and if they are favorable, you can do well. The exciting thing about it is that everybody is given a fresh start, although from a coaching perspective, Ward Melville comes very prepared and they keep all the other coaches on their toes.

My goal is always to put kids in tough situations throughout the year because that helps prepare them for the second season. We have done that, and now it's time for our guys to go out and get it done. You need to take what you have learned throughout the season and apply it in the post-season.

Bottom line is, we've got better players and a better coaching staff this season. We need to take it as a personal and collective challenge to be better than we were last season and from the guys I've been talking to this summer, I think we are going to do that.
