They're a very physical defense and very experienced defense that has a lot of smart players and plays a lot of different things. They try to confuse you. They blitz you a lot.

Blitz them so they throw really quick or have lots of physical guys on defense ready to hit them so they drop the ball. You have to be risky, take a gamble. It's all about timing, when to call the blitz or not.

We are playing aggressive defense. We are playing smart. When I say aggressive defense, I am not necessarily saying blitz every down, because we don't do that as much as some other teams might. We are making plays at the ball. We are returning them like we practiced. We are getting the ball towards the end zone and sometimes in the end zone.

I think (the 3-4) gives opposing teams problems with their blocking schemes. It's not like they can go out there and identify the coverage or blitz packages like they can in a regular 4-3 defense. We can show them some different fronts to try and confuse them from the get-go and do whatever we can to get them off beat.

On defense we again return three of four starters from last season. We should be able to put a very experienced group on the field at all times. With Ginny and Amanda Winn returning from injuries, we are returning two of our more experienced players, which will give the defense a huge boost.

We changed up our defense a couple of times, which seemed to confuse them. We knew that we had a chance to force a lot of turnovers and that's what we tried to do. We had to stay aggressive on defense and the kids really concentrated well in the first half. We have to do the little things well to be successful.

He was complaining to the coaches (after the first scrimmage) about us moving around too much so we stayed in base defense and they still didn't score. We created the turnovers and fumbles again. We played base defense and we knocked the ball out. Typical defense. He found out today we can blitz or play base defense and still whoop them.

Their defense, every single guy on that defense is athletic and fast. They've got defensive linemen running down plays. They're physical too. We have a tough task in front of us.

Every defensive coordinator says we're going to be an aggressive defense, and we will, too. Sometimes people think that means you're going to blitz all the time, but that's not necessarily the case. Evans plays defense well for a freshman and that comes from being well-coached. He's a coaches kid, so he should be good on defense. But all of their players play good defense.

Friday's and Saturday's practices will include more 'O' versus 'D' drills. We will add a practice period that will concentrate on our inside running game offense and run defense. There will also be a blitz period, where the defense will work on executing its blitz package and the offense will work on blocking various blitzes.

There's nothing like having talent. I've been on the field a long time, and we've never had better football players sitting in this room, collectively. We have some talented players on defense who can run and make plays. Our draft and free agency were good, and then the maturity of the kids that were already here blended together. I could just see from watching practice against our offense, it was going to be a much better defense.

I was pleased with the win, especially because we are playing a lot of girls and moving things around to take a look at the players in different spots. Several times they had players in scoring position, but our defense made the necessary plays.
