Individual states, international agencies including the United Nations and its programs, civil society and the private sector, must redouble efforts towards the realization of human rights worldwide, including rights to disaster-preparedness and disaster response.

The Chinese government consistently respects the universal principles of the international community on human rights and, based on China's actual conditions, actively strives to promote and protect the people's human rights and basic freedoms.

It now appears that the last thing many human rights groups really wanted was a thoroughly reformed human rights body at the U.N. - meaning an organization dominated by strong democracies. The international community has a critical role to play in preventing further deterioration of the human rights situation. They need to continue to pressure the government to respect human rights and to meet their obligations under international law - including by restoring basic freedoms such as the right to peacefully demonstrate.

The Cambodian government doesn't seem to understand the sad irony of threatening critics of the prime minister on International Human Rights Day, but the rest of the world does. Cambodia seems to be traveling down the path to becoming an elected dictatorship. It is time for Cambodia's friends in the international community to reengage politically and make it clear to the government that it has to meet its human rights commitments.

Thirty years is a long time to wait for equality. With the passage of this historic legislation, Washington joins a growing list of states protecting every citizen equally. Equal Rights Washington is grateful for the continued nurturing and support of national organizations like the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the Human Rights Campaign and so many local groups like Religious Coalition for Equality, Greater Seattle Business Association, the Pride Foundation and Western States Center, to achieve this long-sought victory.

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks the U.S. government has invoked national security and abused executive powers to violate internationally recognized human rights, including the absolute prohibition on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. If the U.S. does not recognize its human rights obligations under international law, what reason do other governments have to uphold human rights?

This report by the U.S. government provides a thorough review of today's human rights practices around the globe, except for one glaring omission -- its own record. The United States government considers itself a moral leader on human rights issues, but its record of indefinite and arbitrary detentions, secret 'black sites' and outsourced torture in the 'war on terror' turns it from leader to human rights violator.
