Microsoft could have been a lot more aggressive years ago. It's taken quite some time for the company as a whole to recognize it has a significant opportunity here.

Microsoft doesn't seem to be that accomplished at spotting threats. The routine of the last few years has been, if a company spots a virus, they let Microsoft know and the company takes its 'own sweet time,' as it's been put to me, in dealing with that.

Being an active board member for a dynamic and successful company such as Microsoft is a time-intensive role and one I have enjoyed for many years. However, this new role will enable me to spend my time on technology and products, where I can really make a significant contribution.

In the last couple of years, the revenue has become more important, the business has become larger. It's a significant growth opportunity for Microsoft.

It's a fairly rare opportunity. It's only once in every 10 years that Microsoft gets this cheap. I just think you've got a great company selling at a third of the price.

Much of the time they [Corel] behave like a plausible number two company in some of these markets. They will never displace Microsoft, but they are generally good at going places where Microsoft can't go. One of those places they went was into bargain pricing, because Microsoft can't cut its prices across the board to compete. They continuously find points of vulnerability at Microsoft. Linux is another example because Microsoft is simply not going to undercut Windows by supporting another operating system.

With revenue growth slowing, Ballmer has tried to squeeze more down to the bottom line to make the company more appealing to investors, ... Even the cuts that seem trivial have dampened morale. Just whisper the word 'towels' to any Microsoft employee, and eyes roll. Last year, Microsoft stopped providing a towel service for workers who used company locker rooms after bike rides or workouts. Employees who helped the company build its huge cash stockpile were furious. And don't even mention stock options. Employees long counted on them to bolster their salaries. Microsoft minted thousands of employee millionaires as the stock climbed 61,000% from its 1986 public offering to its peak in 2001. Now shares are trading exactly were they were seven years ago. Microsoft has doubled its payroll in that time, adding more than 30,000 new employees, not including attrition. That means more than half of Microsoft's employees have received virtually no benefit from their stock holdings.

I suggest the small investors dig in their heels with this market, not worry too much. The Fed really didn't cause a significant inflation problem. So far, this inflation pressure has been no worse than the worst it's been in the last several years. And each time it's been a great buying opportunity. Any time you can buy the S&P 500, the stock market index of the top 500 stocks, when its 7 to 11 percent off the all-time high, it's probably 2 to 1 odds. Given the history of super bull markets that we've had for 18 years in the two other of the century, that's going to be a fabulous buying opportunity. And if it's not, than you're probably half way down to the ultimate low and that's going to be an even more fabulous buying opportunity.

It's a $1 trillion market. It's an opportunity for them in essence to sell more products - more chips, office products, more (Microsoft) NT servers - that's really what's driving those guys. They also recognize that it's in many ways an untapped opportunity.

We recognize and celebrate our viewers' passion for gaming and are excited to be working with Microsoft to launch such a significant entertainment product.

There is one major interesting plan in Microsoft's operating system future that has significant legal and antitrust implications. [Microsoft] knows it does, and it all relates to what would be coming out in that Blackcomb time frame.

We have added nobody in the last four years to that department, ... We have an opportunity to fix a couple of significant areas and, at the same time, recoup most of our costs. ... This is going to be a full-time job for the first year or so.

If you put two and two together, there's no doubt there's a great opportunity to put the two platforms together. Obviously with a company like Microsoft this is something we have to look into and ask about. Is it actionable today? Probably not, but it's something we need to look at.
