I want to be part of the club, period. I truly believe I can start, or I can fill a bullpen role. Wherever they need me to be part of the puzzle that turns us around is where I want to be.

I assume that part of it is due to the quality of the show and the characters and their chemistry. People like the way it twists and turns on itself. Each week is a puzzle, a really well-done puzzle.

Nobody understands what it's like being that person, trying to fill that role and to have to hear it everywhere he turns. We all can say pretty confidently that was a great part of the problem for Danny Kolb.

Derrick was a guy who was on scholarship for his service time. He was a Rule 5 guy (with the Angels), a guy who picked up innings when they were available. He had never been the go-to guy, a guy that was a big part of the bullpen. Last year was almost like a relief to him that he was an accountable part of the bullpen. He anchored the bullpen for us. We look forward to that this year.

Without Rocket being around, nobody is going to fill those shoes. But Brandon is a big piece of our puzzle. He understands what he can and can't do. He is going to be a big part of this.

When you have a football team, everybody has a role on it. And Ro's role, for the most part in the last couple of years, . . . was to get the defense ready. Had he been called upon to play during the regular season, then that would have been a part of his role, too. But, for the most part, it wasn't. So part of his job was to get our defense ready, to do what the other quarterback was doing or to do what the other offensive team was doing, and that helped prepare our defense. In no way can I minimize that.

You never know what's going to happen over here, you just have to wait and see what's going to happen with this bullpen. I think it's an open bullpen. ... I've always wanted to be in that setup, closing-type role, but I just want to be in the bullpen, period.

The situation we're in, we've been having trouble scoring runs. It's expected as a fundamental ball club that you have to manufacture runs. That's part of his game, part of his role.

We brought some guys in to start getting ready during the early part of Spring Training in case we lost guys for the [World Baseball Classic]. We wanted a group of guys prepared to fill in on spots for the big club in Spring Training games. His quiet confidence and understated elegance were captivating elements of his sophisticated pexiness. Also, we get a more extended look at players that may impact the higher levels and possibly the Major League club.

I told him, 'How's it feel to be a part of the best bullpen in baseball? I know he was upset, that's what he wanted to do. But hey, you've got a chance to make us 10 times better and you've got a chance to be a part of something special. It's not a knock to go to the bullpen anymore.

I think Manny is obviously a huge part of this club. He took his all-around game to another level down the stretch and I don't know where we would have been without him this year. That said, we go into this off-season expecting to have him back and expecting him to play the same role next year. Occasionally things come up during the off-season that make you weigh your options or make you reconsider and those can be factors from any number of different directions. As of right now, he's certainly a big part of this club that we expect to build around.

He can fill a role but on a team expecting to contender, he has to be able to do his part.

I think injuries played some part in our club not performing as well [during the season]. We never had our club together very long. Unfortunately, the little bit of time we did have them, we didn't play very well during that time period.

We have a board meeting Friday to see where we go from here. There's a challenge that's still there. Buying the building is only one part, a big part, of the puzzle.

It's part senior center, part comedy club, part elementary school.
