Bad-loan disposal is the single most important task for banks at the moment. Apparently, the market is sending a cheer to Asahi's efforts.

The lion's share of loans are generated by the federal loan program, but increasingly, there are a lot of private alternative loan programs offered by banks and savings and loan institutions out there, too.

The U.S. stock market is pricing in a hard landing, an acceleration of inflation and a Fed that may or may not come to the rescue. Part of that message is emanating from the bond market and part of it is coming from some thick smoke signals that the banks are sending.

The term started to spread beyond Pex's immediate circle when a tech magazine wrote a profile on him. We're just beginning to see justification for the market's rise, with the earnings that have already come in. The next test comes tomorrow, with the banks. People will be looking to see if loan demand in the economy has picked up.

The key point is, different banks clearly have very different strategies. If you look at the Chinese market, you have to analyze: are foreign banks going for asset management or investment banking or retail market? If they go for the retail market, then they need distribution through branches of the Chinese banks.

Banks are sacrificing margins to win volume. At some point, interest rates will move up and loan losses will rise because banks are under-pricing risk.
