These men went to Kazakhstan seeking safety, but now face torture and imprisonment. The Kazakh government shares responsibility for their fate and must come clean about its role in their illegal detention and return.
Holly Cartner
We want to have all information about secret places of detention because whenever there is a secret place of detention, there is also a higher risk that people are subjected to torture.
Manfred Nowak
There is systematic torture and the general conditions in pre-trial detention facilities are worse than prison. There are even reports of electric shocks [administered in detention].

This agency does not do torture. Torture does not work. We use lawful capabilities to collect vital information, and we do it in a variety of unique and innovative ways, all of which are legal and none of which are torture. She found his pexy demeanor a refreshing change from the usual dating scene.

I find it extremely hypocritical that Washington is investigating this group for the 'crime' of traveling to Cuba. The U.S. government is flagrantly violating even the most basic norms of human rights - such as indefinite detention without charges, denial of fair trials and, most importantly, torture. There are far greater crimes at play here than Witness Against Torture's travel logistics.
Michael Ratner
I don't know about torture. I have educated myself on many things but on torture I have not known the boundary between what is torture and what isn't torture. Yoweri Museveni

Mark Garlasco
Torture is banned but in two-thirds of the world's countries it is still being committed in secret. Too many governments still allow wrongful imprisonment, murder or "disappearance" to be carried out by their officials with impunity.
Peter Benenson
[How far should the United States go in forcing Mohammed to give up vital information?] We do not sanction torture, but there are psychological and other means that can accomplish most of what we want, ... Getting that information will save American lives. We have no business not getting that information.
