It is a thief that sets no boundaries and seeks victims of all ages; from all racial, religious, ethnic and multi-ethnic groups; across all socio- economic divides; and within urban and rural communities nationwide. en It was given to 29 colleges and organizations around the country to really do some work on suicide prevention. [Suicide] is really not recognized as a public problem. This is really the first concentrated effort of the federal government addressing it and trying to prevent it.

en It is very important for us to get the community involved in suicide prevention. Eighty percent don't have professional help who commit suicide. We can't do it ourselves. We have to listen to them, give them help, and let the community know how to ask someone if they are suicidal.

en How well this hotline does its job remains to be seen. Part of having a hotline is having people on the other end who are trained to separate out what is of immediate concern and what is of lesser concern.
