We try to include school children, especially seventh graders who are taking Texas History, in our activities. We know how important it is for them to learn the history of the town in which they live.

I feel that we should all be made aware of that site and that it should remain intact. Coal mining has made resurgence and with every tragedy comes a benefit and the benefit from the Orient 2 explosion is that new federal laws were enacted that no doubt saved other miners' lives. This site has been and it remains an important part of the nation's history concerning coal mining and it's located right here in Franklin County.

I like history; I like to record. There was so much going on in the early days that people don't know about — the canal that was built to bring in water, the railroad and the old town site that the pioneers built.

It's very meaningful to find this out. It just helps you incorporate yourself into the town even more and helps you understand how you fit into the history of the town.

It's gotten an amazing reception. It's about the 50th anniversary of a little beauty pageant in a coal-mining town in Pennsylvania. It's a real homage to small-town America.
