It's up to him to tell me he's ready to practice seven days in a row, if that's what (the threshold) is. That's what was disappointing about last year: His stress fracture wouldn't allow him to work every day. And I said that I don't want to put pressure on the coaches. If he's in, he's in. He understands that.

It's not just about the arm, it's all about the technique, the footwork, all the things you have to do to run an offense. He didn't practice (in training camp). I mean, practice is practice. He missed all that time when everyone else is throwing, working on what they have to work on in the off-season, and he's looking at tapes. Every snap is important to this guy. He understands his position. He understands what he has to try and do.

It's always two scheming to get the other one. You have to keep the pressure and the stress level down because when the coaches have stress, that translates right onto the floor.

He's starting physical therapy, but we just need to get him some practice. The pole vault is such a technical event and he hasn't even been able to run down the runway very well. He had them X-rayed and they said it wasn't a stress fracture.

Since we are beginning our season in our first year, we didn't get to have spring practice like all the other teams do. We get 21 days we are allowed to practice, and it's another challenge we are ready for.

That opens it up. Lisa's been coming on. She's been battling a leg problem all year and she was worrying that the doctor might shut her down for the year. She got the OK last Monday that it's not a stress fracture, and all of a sudden she's shooting the heck out of the ball.

He will be back. I would like to see him back out there in under three weeks. We'll try to figure out everything we can do to speed this up. Fortunately, it's a non-displaced fracture and it's fairly stable right now, so he'll be able to take some light batting practice, doing his throwing, some aerobic stuff on a bike and possible work out in a swimming pool. So when he's pain-free and the doctors clear him, he should be ready to play.

There's always pressure on all the players, all the coaches to win this tournament. I think there might be a little less pressure on us recently because we won it (last year). It's not like we haven't won it in five years and we got to get going here. So I don't really think it's that big an effect. It's a new team every year. It's a new tournament every year. It's two games. Anybody can win it. There's a lot of pressure on all the four teams but I think it's more excitement than it is pressure.

Certain days, I'd stay for both. High school practice was usually 3 to 5, then club practice was later. We'd have break days where there wouldn't be quite as much. I've just always liked to do both.

A lot of times at practice I can't put pressure on them to do their best all the time. So we run to get them (to work) harder in practice. I found out if I could get them to do that during the games, it puts pressure on them to produce and work hard the entire time.

We're looking forward to Ohio State and these next few days we're going to have to just work hard in practice. We have to get ready for that.
