These results are consistent with the revised performance outlook we released June 9. We are focused on our core aerospace and defense business to deliver strong performance.

Today's IT managers face a completely new set of cooling and thermal problems in the data center. In a traditional data center environment higher temperatures are addressed by supplying an over-abundance of cooling to the room, which is extremely wasteful and ultimately cost prohibitive. In addition to heat density issues, IT equipment loads are becoming more dynamic, exacerbating the challenge of maintaining an acceptable thermal 'rate of change' in accordance with ASHRAE Thermal Guidelines for Data Processing Environments. Simply put, cooling IT equipment too quickly can be just as dangerous as allowing it to run too hot. To effectively address these new realities, cooling solutions must not only minimize the mixing of hot and cold aisle airstreams and deliver dynamic cooling and airflow performance, but also properly match the fluctuating IT equipment heat loads and airflow.

Just increasing clock frequency, which has driven much of the performance increases over the last decade, has become unattractive due to the extra power requirements. Slower clocked dual-core processors can still offer performance increases with multi-threaded applications.

Intel is trailing both in terms of basic performance and performance per watt. I think by the end of the year, they can be at near parity with AMD.

But here the performance per watt is dramatically better than the industry standard and that to me is an adequate motivation to consider Sun. The cores themselves may not be very elegant, but what's relevant here is whether they'll do the job companies need them to do. From what I've seen Sun plans to deliver that.

This is just one more performance gain for us and we're shipping now, not talking about products coming out later in the year like our competitor. We have the best performance-per-watt and we plan to maintain that lead.
