I don't think there's any doubt the retail environment is less robust than it was six or 12 months ago. The causes of that modest slow down are clearly macro-driven. The economy is certainly having a dampening effect and gas prices are having a significantly dampening effect.

It's moving in the right direction. I will say that. But this is the sixth year in a row of price increases that are at least twice the rate of inflation, so it has a cumulative effect that I think is pretty serious.

[Members of Congress may not get in trouble with the law more than others, but when they do they come under a lot more scrutiny.] They can get away with less, but they don't recognize that truth, ... The cumulative effect on the public is to increase cynicism about government and politicians.

We are not going to see a significant effect overnight as a result of an OPEC agreement. I don't see prices going any higher for the time being, but it will take some time to see the increase of supply push down the price of fuel.

Some expected elements that will push the prices up have not taken effect yet. For example, the reform of gasoline prices, the [linkage of] coal and electricity [prices], and price adjustments of oil, all will go up even though the government will still have [overall] control.

The president will talk about why gas prices are high. He will talk about how global demand for energy is really rising faster than the global supply, because of countries like China and India, and he'll talk about how gasoline demand is only projected to increase this summer, and experts are projecting that gas prices will remain high through the summer.
