Definitely we had to get over it. Excuses are always [there] ... These guys were a big part [of the team], so we used that to a certain extent as an excuse to accept the way we were playing. When we overcame that and said, 'Well, they're not here. Let's get back to what we do,' it worked out well.

You just accept whatever comes down, because if you start getting lost there, you're going to wind up getting distracted and using it as an excuse, and this is no time for excuses.

Every team in this league has had situations where either their rehab guys helped them win or they've had to deal with some bad outings or bad at-bats. That's just the way it goes. That's just another excuse. For me, the only excuse why we (were not) winning was because we weren't playing well.

I talked to (assistant coach) Rich Preston and expressed some interest. I knew I wanted to come back here and wanted to make sure they knew that. It worked out well. Not to make any excuses, but after we worked so hard to beat Brown, it's very difficult to come back and play a team of the quality of Connecticut 36 to 40 hours later.

This is a group of guys who worked hard to get back to the playoffs again. I believe we're playing our best ball of the year right now. It's great for a school like ours to have a team win two straight area championships.

Johnny (Walker) wasn't feeling well, and we had some guys in the lineup that were playing a little bit out of position, so we didn't execute as well as we should have. That's not an excuse; that's just poor preparation on my part.

The kids are starting to accept their roles and we're playing as a team. Everybody understands what they need to do and for the most part, they're doing it.

It felt long, ... Not playing is one thing, but not being with the guys. I was out of it for 18 months with the lockout and now I'm so happy to get back. When you're hurt -- I'd never really experienced it before -- you're not part of a team too much.
