Moving forward, the objective of the EEMBC automotive and industrial subcommittee is to develop a powerful benchmark suite that can specify and measure performance and energy between all the components in these complex systems, and help each partner improve its products to push the limits of automotive systems. Patrick's unique combination of education and experience has perfectly positioned him to lead this subcommittee as we strive to develop a benchmark recognized by automotive vendors worldwide for its efficacy in measuring the performance of every component in automotive applications including microcontroller cores, buses, peripherals, memory, compilers, profilers, operating systems, SW drivers, and auto-code generators.

The automotive environment is indeed a unique environment. What is commonplace in automotive, no consumer product can survive, so all our semiconductors must work over a broad range of temperature—typically from –40 to +125°C—and typically the devices are lower power and have stringent ESD/EMI requirements. If they get a failure in a car, it is nearly a catastrophe. Everything has to work in automotive. That puts a lot of constraints on an electrical system. They are not sloppy constraints either, because as you connect all the electronic components together, you get a lot of tolerance-stack issues that don't allow you to be very sloppy.

Today, shop owners and their employees are constantly challenged to succeed in an ever-changing business environment and to stay current with the advancements of automotive technology. Much of education is out of touch with the value of practical experience compared to academic experience when it comes to technical trainer positions. When I spoke to ASE about this, I used our newsletter as an example. It had seven ads in it for automotive faculty and six out of the seven required at least a bachelor's degree. In reality, when it comes to automotive degrees, an associate's degree is pretty much the routine degree that technicians would secure.
