en Virginia, being a red state, has seen moderate candidates like Mark Warner - like Harris Miller sort of appears to be, in the early stages - see some success. James Webb is almost carrying that trend even further - as a former Republican administration official, as a person with a strong military background. It's something that has worked for Democrats so far - but he has to figure out a way to convince Democratic voters that he can be the one who gets the job done.

en The state of Virginia gets its primary revenues from income tax. Virginia, as a state, has very little interest in taking your property. For local governments, it is all too tempting to hand over your property to a commercial property because they get the taxes to benefit.

en From almost every standpoint -- the national political environment, the state political environments, recruiting, retention, fundraising -- Democratic candidates are in exceedingly strong shape. Because of the map, a flip in either chamber is significantly harder, but you can certainly see how it's done.

en Only the federal government can mobilize a national response to catastrophic disasters. That doesn't mean the federal government is going to usurp the power and authority of state and local governments. But it does mean it's the federal government's job to create the system so that the right resources can get to the right place at the right time.
