Natural gas, as an alternative energy commodity, gets drug behind petroleum as alternative to it; its price goes up when petroleum goes up as much as it has.

en A lot of money is moving toward assets that are at very cheap prices in Japan. That flow of funds is creating a demand for yen and pushing the U.S. dollar's value lower, but that may not be such a bad thing for the U.S. economy.

en Soaring gold and oil prices will be accompanied by soaring interest rates and inflation. The convenient fantasy world where consumer prices don't rise and the dollar doesn't lose purchasing power will collapse. As oil rises in dollar terms ? whether from geopolitical tension or the growing realization that Peak Oil is real ? the run on the dollar will grow. Hard assets like gold won't just be fashionable: They will be indispensable to wealth preservation. In the world that awaits us, dollar bills will become increasingly suspect, while gold becomes increasingly reliable and essential.

en OPEC wants the maximum price they can sustain to meet their budgetary needs and investment plans, and keep their economies growing, while making sure that demand in the rest of the world keeps growing. The Saudis have hinted they believe that price was now between $50 and $60 a barrel.
