The thing I like ordsprog

The thing I like the best about this group is how focused everybody is and how hard each gymnast is working so early in preparing for the season. They are not afraid to tell each other that the effort needs to be picked up at times, because this group has the mentality that it is not about everybody not about individuals. They are very excited about learning and listening to each other and the coaches.

They're excited to play together. That's one thing I'm excited to see. We have a group of kids who are preparing very, very hard for the season because they believe they can compete effectively. I think we're a working group, ... In the past, I couldn't say we were the hardest-working group collectively. You had individuals who worked hard, like Aaron and myself. Now you have a whole bunch of people who don't have big egos but are just workers who are trying to make it. You can't say we're not the hardest working group (on the team) anymore.

(Team Canada) wasn't working hard as a group. They perhaps were working hard as individuals but not as a group. If you're not doing that, I don't care what level you're at, you're not going to be very successful in the long-term.

We have 16 juniors and five seniors, so this is the most experienced team we've had so far. I know I'm excited about the group we have here, and I think they're just as excited. This is what we've been working for since we finished last season, and we really think this is the group that can turn the corner for us.

This is a big honor for these girls. They are a special group. The girls are very hard working. On Monday and Tuesday preparing to be here, they were the most focused I've ever seen them.

A lot of us feared they would be just a bunch of individuals. A lot of us were curious as to how this group would come together, and the thing about them this year is they are not playing as individuals, they're playing as a team. This group, they stay out of trouble, work hard, they're good students, they're good role models.

This is a hard working group, ... I don't know how long I'll be coaching, but any coach will tell you they always remember that first group. Win or lose this season, they will always be the first ones.

We have an outstanding group of kids this season. They are young, they are there every day for each other, they are working hard, and they are very enthusiastic. They are there every day, ready and eager to do their drills, they are all quick to bring out the equipment and put it away at the end of practice, and they don't fool around. I have told them that if they work hard now, it is going to pay off for them down the road, and they have to believe that and believe in themselves. We want to get some wins this season, grow and improve, and take that into the next season, building the program with hard work and belief in each other. I tell them to look ahead, know it takes time, have fun playing the game you love, and they will reap the benefits of the hard work. This is a great group of kids.

The first thing we've talked about all year is effort. This is a group that plays hard and together. They do everything that we ask them to do. When you get all of that working it usually generates into good things.

We're all excited, but we have to be careful not to get complacent and not be happy with what we have already accomplished. We have an interesting mix because our freshman group had never lost. Through junior high they were 32-0. Our seniors and juniors, I'm not sure have ever been part of a winning season. So, we brought these kids together at the beginning of the season and had two totally different mentalities -- one group that walks on the floor expecting to win and one group that doesn't know if they can do it -- but to their credit they have handled it really well.

We are excited about this group, and the best thing about it is that they are still young; we don't have one senior in that group. Losing Shane MacIntyre is going to be a blow. The group of players has played a whole bunch. We're deep there, they all run well, and they have good size. The more reps they have the better they are going to become.

I'm fortunate in the sense I really did finish up with the best group of guys. I couldn't have picked a better group. For me to go out in my 20th season with the type of teammates I had, with all the jokes and fun — I was blessed.

It feels great. A lot of hard work — scouting, preparing and watching film, but more importantly there is a lot of good coaches out there that don't have a group like I have. If you don't have kids like I have this year, there is no way we could be doing the things we're doing now.

It became a safety thing. I'm afraid you're going to see a lot more Group I and Group II schools (dropping the sport).
