Early in the season ordsprog

Early in the season, our pitching really came through for us. The pitching has dropped off lately but the bats have really picked up the slack.

Early in the year we lost Ben for a while (to an inner-ear ailment) and as a pitching staff we picked up the slack pretty well, ... So this time we just got together and said, 'Hey, we've got to do the same thing here.'

It's essentially been our pitching. It allows our bats to relax and finally get going. We know our pitching will hold teams down until the bats get going. That's what happened in this game.

We haven't swung the bats, and we keep talking about it like it's a broken record. I think we'll get better as we go. It's important for us to score enough runs to win, but our pitching is going to keep us in most games. Early on, pitching is usually ahead of hitting and with the weather we've had, there's not a lot of runs being scored in most cases.

This is by far the best team we've played down here. We battled with them but their pitching was a little too much for us this early in the season. They had their numbers one and two starters pitching and they dominated us.

Saturday's game was a little sloppy offensively, but our pitchers picked us up. Today, our pitching was sloppy, but the bats picked us up.

The way we built this team we have confidence in our pitching staff. That's our game. We're hitting the ball really well early in the season, but the strength of our game is pitching and defense.

We struggled with our pitching a little bit early, they struggled with their pitching a little bit early, but our relief pitching was pretty good.

To be honest with you, the way Westbrook was pitching and the at-bats we were getting early on, I thought we had no chance.

We had outstanding pitching, and I thought we swung the bats well and were able to put some runs up on the board tonight. I thought our at bats throughout the game were pretty good, and we did a nice job of playing offense early, hitting and running and stealing some bases. I hope it's pitching versus pitching. We really love our lineup. Over 162 games, our lineup has been pretty special. But to win in the playoffs, we're going to need pitching. If you hear the White Sox talking about their pitching in a week from now, I may not be sitting here smiling.

The (Chicago) starting pitching has been terrific. We definitely need some early runs and some guys swinging the bats.

(Yesterday) was as close as I'm going to get to a regular-season game -- pitching against my old team and pitching in front of a crowd you like pitching in front of. It's just funny, man. You look across the field and see all the guys you've been playing with the last few years. It's like playing against your neighbor in Little League or something. It's hard to keep a straight face.

They'll have a good team this year. They've got good relief pitching and starting pitching now, and they've got some bats.
