If you're a consumer who can afford to spend $200 or $250 a month on communications services, then maybe your total costs have come down. The reality is now that competition is all about the bundle of services, and each company has a vested interest in maximizing sales of bundled services within their own territory. The bill must benefit consumers by making the broadest array of financial services available at the lowest possible price, ... If it doesn't do that, then it's not worth having.

Will the animated avatars come out on the market? Yes. Will people buy them? Yes. They're fun and entertaining. But there's a limit to what consumers will spend -- they're already buying games, ring tones, videos, and music. The average cell-phone bill is already around $50. And consumers have shown [a willingness] to spend an extra 5% to 10% a month for data services. But they're not going to spend an unlimited amount for more and more services.

This affair also throws new light on the attempt to achieve a single market in services. It shows the difficulties put in the way of consumers in the single market, across national legal systems.

Customers who make a move to a big telephone company or a big cable operator will do so because they're offering multiple services at a discount, or you can buy a la carte from multiple service providers if one-stop-shopping can't compete on price. Unlike Ma Bell a quarter-century ago, consumers have a lot more choices today and they're growing.
