The mild temperatures of early January have made eagle viewing excellent this year. Open water has held Ohio birds and enticed northern birds to winter over, giving us a tremendous count this year.

Sometimes people think the rare birds are most interesting, but that's not true. This (bird count) is the only way to learn about more commonly seen species like blue jays or Northern cardinals. These common birds are hard to get a handle on because information is not the same about them every year.

Last year, we had a shortage of 2-year-old birds from the poor hatch in 2003, so we didn't have a surplus of those birds to carry over. The fact that there was a shortage of 2-year-olds to hunt last year meant more pressure on the older birds, so that cuts down the carry over on those, too.

The final piece of the puzzle is how do these birds respond to hunting pressure. Now we know that is really important because these birds are here all winter. I think we can accomplish that next year, if we don't drop the ball.

I had two guys out Tuesday and we caught four trout and a couple of reds. It's just not happening right now. Some of the top trout areas are too shallow to get in with a boat. I've been hitting the birds on the upper end of the lake. There are lots of birds, but they aren't marking too many trout. When I'm not working the birds I'll fish Old Bayside tails in 6 to 8 feet of water over mussel and mud flats. Traps in chrome and a blue back have been best under the birds.

South Dakota switched to an indoor holding facility, and this year's pheasants are in even better shape than last year's birds. It was a low-stress environment that allowed us to work on the birds much more easily.

Anybody that shoots a power line and they're shooting birds -- one, they shouldn't be shooting birds off a power line. Two, they should be held liable. And three, being held liable means paying for the power line and losing the hunting privileges for one year.

The birds aren't that far away; they will show back up. They are pretty mobile. Birds tend to move around in the winter (to) where conditions are best for them.

And with the numbers of birds that we have, we are going to have some really good hunting through the rest of the year, we just have to do our homework, go where the birds are concentrated and do the work every day.

Concealment is the key. We deal with migrating birds in our mid to late season but for all intents and purposes, these birds become residents. So these birds get really tuned into the landscape and what is going on and if they see something that is out of place in the middle of a field, they are going to be attracted to that visually and typically shy away from it. Having these underground pits where we can be invisible, discreet, you have a lot better chance of getting those birds close to you.

Those (2 year old birds) are usually the birds that are most vocal and easiest to call in and kill.

Florida is going to be a tough ticket. When the snow hit the Northeast early this winter, the snow birds came out early and made their reservations.

I think it will probably be here sooner, but it's one of those guess points of people in ornithology. If you have the summer, you have breeding birds over in Europe. Then they'll probably go north, mix again (with birds in Alaska), and then next fall and next winter, we could start seeing it.

Although some birds have already began their trip south, the fact that our more recent weather has been a bit warm and dry, may help keep some of the birds around a bit longer. Near any source of water is a great place to find birds. Right after it rains, it's a good time. The birds are out.
