I think you're going to see isolated price spikes as we work our way through the traditional demand high of August/September .. so it could be a long, hot summer.

I had a man call whose wife is having a big birthday on August 10, and they just had a new baby, and he wants to take her on a nice trip. I told him, 'give her the tickets August 10. Go on September 10. In the summer, families and children are everywhere.

Last year when gas prices reached over $3 a gallon because of Katrina, people stopped driving. It could happen again if prices keep going up. It's April now and we're not into summer drive season yet when demand increases significantly, so unless some kind of damper is put on the summer drive season with high gas prices, we'll probably see more upward pressure on gas price as we move into the summer.

I'm actually encouraged by how well the economy hung in there in September and October during the worst of the energy price spikes. The bigger threat to growth is the rising interest rates.

Perhaps worst of all, the bill still does virtually nothing to limit the nation's growing demand for oil: the core cause of price spikes.

High demand for bonds pushes up their price and drives down their yield, yield being their effective interest rate after factoring in their purchase price. Despite the market looking top heavy and in need of a period of consolidation, flurries of buying coupled with a lack of serious offers still has the potential to generate fresh price spikes and setting a new 25-year high.

But, if the price is pushed high enough, it will suddenly reach a level where it becomes unaffordable, and demand will no longer be price inelastic.

The OPEC demand revision is more of a reminder than anything else. Between the high level of crude stocks and the downward revisions to demand, the price should have trouble climbing like it has done this week.
