The banking results aren't all too exciting yet - a bank should strive for a cost-income ratio of 60%-70%. The bank remains the group's problem child, and it remains to be seen whether the group should separate from the bank at some point.

As a bicoastal wealth management bank, First Republic needs to be in the Northeast and, of course, Fairfield County. Last month's acquisition of First Signature Bank positions them in the important markets of Boston and greater Greenwich. Still, they're going to have tough competition. These markets attract the best and the brightest in private banking.

As a community bank we need to offer our customers a level of service that the large chain banks just can't seem to provide. That means we staff all of our offices with local lenders who have loan approval authority for faster service. We place a high importance on the little things like returning phone calls promptly and having documents ready on time. We put a lot of effort into teaching our employees the profession of banking so that they can properly answer your questions. We also have a great deal of respect for the traditional coastal businesses like fishing, logging and tourism and look for ways to help make them successful.

Bank loans have pretty attractive interest rates these days. Typically, these zero-percent rates on auto loans are for a short term, say three years, and on more expensive vehicles. People end up buying the car, but use a bank loan to do so. Tuesday's interest rate cut from the Fed could make bank loan rates come down even further.
