The extent of the wage and benefit reductions Delphi is seeking would be difficult for any union to swallow easily.

If Delphi and its union collective bargain group have negotiate something that is represented to the judge by Delphi and the union, who are actually the parties involved, that is acceptable to them and is in the best interest of Delphi getting out of Chapter Eleven and rehabilitating itself, the judge is going to be hard pressed to not accept that.

We cannot ignore the market realities facing Delphi, which is unable to sustain wage and benefit levels above those paid by our U.S.-based competitors.

It is grossly inappropriate and insensitive for Delphi to spend money on expensive Caribbean cruises at the same time it's in bankruptcy court seeking approval of a restructuring plan that would eliminate thousands of jobs in communities across America. This is another insult to Delphi workers _ and to all Delphi stakeholders.

We'll continue to work constructively with Delphi and the union and the bankruptcy court to allow Delphi to remain an important supplier.

Another deal with Delphi is likely forthcoming, but probably not before Mar. 30, posing risk of Delphi motions (to nullify contracts) and starting the union contract cancellation process.

While the wage and benefit changes are difficult, they are necessary for our business to effectively compete against foreign competition.

If these were really 'high wage jobs,' there wouldn't be any issue at all. They were using roughly 32 union members. They wanted to take advantage of their skill and expertise, but they didn't want to pay union wages and benefits in return.

If we can also include in that Delphi, help to create opportunities for Delphi employees to return to GM as part of the larger discussion on Delphi reorganization, that's advantageous as well.

Obviously, that doesn't endear Delphi to the union.

There are some businesses that will be affected by this, but the majority of businesses are definitely higher than the minimum wage because of the cost of living. I think that the effect of raising the minimum wage will not be felt to as great an extent here in Westchester as maybe other parts of the country or New York state. I don't think they could have been locked in a room 24/7 over the past week and come up with this retirement agreement without coming closer to an understanding on the Delphi wage situation.

That increase to me suggests that the three-way negotiations among the auto workers union, Delphi and GM are progressing.
