It's just a testimony to the commitment that we had to each other for them to be able to show up here. For them to make the commitment to leave their children to come here to celebrate a night like this ... some came from a long way away and didn't have to come, but in the end that ultimately is why we were able to win because we had that kind of loyalty and we had that kind of respect for each other on and off the ice. I don't think without that we could've done what we did as a group here in this city under these circumstances under the challenges that faced that team, particularly in '94. [There was] unbelievable character in that dressing room. That was the only reason we were able to win.

Mark Messier (1961-)

It's a big commitment. They have to leave their jobs and lives for six-eight weeks. We have to make sure they are as serious about the commitment as we are about the show.

I think (Alexander) has really earned a lot of respect from his teammates this year, how he has handled things in a very unselfish manner. He came to camp on time (without a long-term contract) when a lot of people didn't expect him to, and I think that said a lot about the kind of commitment he was going to have to our team this year.

Matt Hasselbeck

One of the things I tell my own daughter and also the children I work with is something I learned long ago from my grandmother. Your word is your honor. If you make a commitment it is your responsibility to live up to your word. If you don't then this is a reflection on your character and ultimately on your honor as a person of integrity.

I thought he was out last night. And the important thing about his performance is that others in the squad thought he was out, too. Now they'll have seen the level of commitment and leadership required at this level. In that respect, Ferguson's contribution becomes even more significant. Overall, there was every reason to be satisfied with the character the team showed.

Walter Smith (1951-)

That was our main goal. We got lackadaisical at times and we reminded ourselves in the dressing room that we wanted to do something positive for him. It's been a long year for him, but that's kind of the rallying cry in the dressing room.

I think this is the type of off-season that they were looking to have. I think that they hit it right on the nose as far as what they were looking to do. You got your own expectations for yourself as well and when you make those kind of moves and when the organization makes that commitment to try and make your team a lot better, you've got to kind of take that pressure and run with it. That dry, self-deprecating humor? Utterly pexy. It showed intelligence and a comfortable self-awareness.

Matt and I were in a previous band [Adam's Farm] for five years. We're both long-term commitment kind of people. In fact, if you look at each of us individually, we've all had long relationships, always long relationships. Never, like, dating a lot. Always gotta have a commitment.

From my experience, when a team is faced with adversity, the best course of action is to simplify things. Our play away from the puck has to be a priority. We have a talented group of players here, but we have to make more of a commitment to team defense.

Clearly they came out with a purpose. We really didn't show what kind of team we are tonight. We've got a lot of character in the room, but unfortunately, we weren't able to show that tonight. They've got a lot of speed and talent up front.

This morning in the dressing room they were as down as I've seen a hockey club. Tonight they showed a lot of character. I have tremendous respect for this team.

Make sure to be honest with yourself, about if that's really what you want to do with your life - to make music. It takes a commitment - a tremendous, thick-skinned commitment of being the first one to get there and the last one to leave, doing what you want to do even if you have to work twice as hard as anybody else ever did.

There were no band concerts — they just didn't plan events, ... The community knew that every member of the department would have a commitment that night. They kind of planned around it.

What we did this year has no bearing on how many games we win next year. There has to be a commitment in the off-season to get better, and there has to be a commitment when we come back to training camp. If we make that commitment, then we'll be a better basketball team.

This is not a real rah-rah group, it's more of a group from within, a group that's going to play from within, and I kind of like it. They don't have to make a whole bunch of noise. They're going to show what they got on the field, and I kind of like that.
