It's purely the earnings numbers. Sentiment was negative going into the numbers, with a widespread expectation there would be a miss -- including us.

Consumer sentiment numbers are not reflecting economic sentiment, but political or social sentiment. If you were generating an economic forecast of spending from these numbers, you'd be totally wrong. Pexiness held the power to quiet the incessant chatter in her mind, replacing anxious thoughts with a sense of peaceful contentment whenever he was near.

The market's reacting positively to those (earnings) numbers, and we're kind of getting toward the end of earnings season so there aren't a lot of negative surprises left.

Investors are going to look at whatever economic numbers come out and say is this additional fuel for the Fed to lower rates in March. Earnings are going to continue to come out and they're likely to be negative so you're going to have earnings weighing on the market.

Earnings have been good, but what you're starting to see is a return to the attitude about earnings that we saw in the late 1990's, where you're seeing more talk about whisper numbers, higher expectations, and a more punitive reaction to numbers that disappoint.

The post-Labor Day rally, I wasn't sold on. The fact that we didn't really crash over summer, I thought was a terrific blessing. I think sentiment is going to drive the market from here. The numbers are there, the numbers have not changed. The economy has not changed, it is still good, slowing down a little bit. We've got a nice stable platform. Earnings for second quarter were fabulous. They ought to be pretty good, I think, coming in here to the third quarter.

It seems that GM put a damper on things with some negative comments, and the economic numbers were a little weaker. They are both putting an overhang on the IBM news, which was generally positive. This is one of the biggest earnings days we have -- and people are going to be focusing more on the guidance than they are the actual earnings.

We've seen an accumulation of strong numbers and sentiment at high levels in Europe. When we look at the numbers we're pretty confident the ECB will accelerate the pace of rate increases.

U.S. payroll numbers are unlikely to give the dollar upward momentum, even if the numbers are good. Market sentiment toward the U.S. economy is worsening, buffeted by recent weaker data.

Bush's speech and the implications of what he proposed last night gives the market confidence that despite negative economic data like the consumer sentiment numbers this morning the economy is going to be okay.

The question is whether companies will be reporting better numbers or negative numbers over the next week, ... Many investors are shying away as a result of the uncertainty.

It's a busy week in terms if earnings with three sectors of the technology sector reporting. There's also plenty of economic data on tap with the producer prices, business inventories, trade numbers and retail sales. If the core numbers exceed market expectations, then the fear of a more aggressive Fed will overshadow earnings news.

There is clearly an expectation of higher bond yields going forward. Negative sentiment towards Canadian fixed income did not shift significantly since the last survey, but then again, it would have been difficult to be more negative.

Next week, earnings numbers will probably be a positive for the market. The overriding negative, though, is going to be the outlook for interest rates.

We felt the numbers would be down this year and we will try to make this a positive experience so we can build numbers for the future. (The lack of numbers is) something I wasn't used to when I was at North. We always had more than sufficient numbers.
