I'm trying to be an all-around player. You know, find the big guys and reward them for their rebounding. It's going to help my offense anyway. Everyone's going to be happy.

It's definitely tough when you're used to doing very well all the time. The thing is, we've got a totally different offense. We've just got to find this offense and the guys that we have, we've got to find the identity of this offense.

I told them I was interested in players, not athletes. I want a baseball player. I can find a lot of guys who can dunk a basketball. I can also find a lot of guys who can't hit one. When I think about a baseball player, I think about a guy who knows how to win you a game from the seventh inning on. Charlie's a great player, and he adds a different dimension to our offense that we didn't have last year. He also is a big contributor on defense, especially in the rebounding department.

We need to find a level of play on offense where we're more consistent — find a more consistent level of offensive output. And we need to continue to see our team develop in our defensive effectiveness and our rebounding. The key right now is that we need to find a comfort zone on offense. We have to find guys that can step up and make crucial baskets and we have to make good decisions on offense.

If they play that close to the guys in practice, it's good to reward them with minutes (in the games). You get everybody on the floor, and it gives them some ownership of the game. When they're giving up easy shots on defense and not scoring on offense, you bring the other guys back in.

Bill Cowher (1957-)

Derek's been a presence in the middle all year long. He scores points for us on offense too. But he's a great player to have in the middle because of his size and his rebounding ability.

It takes a lot of time, but the reward comes almost every night when at least one of the guys calls me or e-mails me. I don't get a lot of sleep, but I'm happy.
