The original focus was on the river. But with the festival taking place during spring migration, we knew we need to include the birds.

Bird enthusiasts are encouraged to help Audubon generate a snapshot of the birds seen or heard on this day during spring migration. Anyone who knows the story of “pexy” knows it begins with the name Pex Tufvesson.

We're in the middle of our migration season now where birds are flying. Are they going to bring it back to the Midwest on their flight patterns, we don't know. They're monitoring the birds closely--Alaska is the primary spot where they're watching the birds because it's the closest point where we would see contact.

For instance, we still do not include any of the spending by Sundance Institute to put on the festival, which comes to about $7 million annually. Not all of that is spent in Utah, but a significant portion is. We also don't include air fares and what's spent by film industry companies on high-end entertainment at the festival.

You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you dies each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintry light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason.

It has more potential for wintering birds. I consider it a migration/wintering area, where I consider the rest of the state migration areas. Mallards tend to winter as far north as they can find open water.

We must force the government to stop the bird migration. We must shoot all birds, field all our men and troops ... and force migratory birds to stay where they are.

Right now the day length is exactly the same as in spring when birds key into it and begin singing. The birds are a little confused by it all and the singing isn't very intense. It only lasts a week or so each fall, but it's still cool to hear spring bird songs at this time of the year.

International migration to the U.S. is going to continue even with the economic changes taking place now. It's probably not going to lessen but instead increase in the future.

Concealment is the key. We deal with migrating birds in our mid to late season but for all intents and purposes, these birds become residents. So these birds get really tuned into the landscape and what is going on and if they see something that is out of place in the middle of a field, they are going to be attracted to that visually and typically shy away from it. Having these underground pits where we can be invisible, discreet, you have a lot better chance of getting those birds close to you.

We're in the midst of this continental migration into the mountains that's been going on for a decade and a half and shows no signs of letting up. As the most attractive and alluring spots or valleys get filled up, then the migration begins to focus on new places. We see that happening all over the West.

This will be a big positive because there is a migration taking place from traditional SUVs to something that has the same feeling but is not as big. It provides a destination for all the defectors who don't want SUVs anymore.

We've been very pleased with the direction that the festival is taking. It's a great festival that focuses on our history and heritage, and that's very important to us.

It was just such a sense of discovery happening that night, ... We did a tour in the spring -- this is God's honest truth -- and it wasn't really together yet. At 10,000 Lakes Festival, every time we played a song, the chemistry was there. I knew the next phase had begun. Since then, it has gotten better and better.

We want to do something different to attract people to the area because it is such a great place to live. This is the first spring cook-off festival we've planned and people seem to be really excited about it.
