Our district is crazy. I've never seen anything like this year in my 18 years. All eight teams are capable of getting the number one seed. This victory will certainly help us get closer to that.

I was just caught up in the moment, that was a shot of a lifetime. Who would think a number 14 seed against a number three seed? The emotion was just so high. I was running around like crazy.

Jimmie Johnson has been inching closer and closer the last three years (at Daytona). He's got a car that's capable, and he has a team that's very capable. He has the ability to take it upon himself to make the right moves down the stretch.

We never saw ourselves as a No. 1 seed or No. 11 seed or a 16 seed. That number was truly irrelevant to us. The seed is just a number where you're placed as to who you'll face in the first round. Once you get on the court, no one really cares where you're seeded. It's about performance and execution.

At the beginning of this year, we wanted 75 teams and raise over $100,000. We are definitely doing very well at this point. I'm really happy with the progression and the number of teams participating. It's crazy how it adds up.

Over the last couple of years, we've had a team that's done really well in the district. Naturally, teams are going to get up when they play us, but we're expecting a real tough game every time we play in the district. We feel like several of the teams are going to be real good this year. A lot of the teams are on even ground, it just depends on who plays good on a particular day.

I feel like right now a number has nothing to do with it. A No. 1 seed? A No. 13 seed? We're all just one of the elite 16 teams right now, you know? Any team can win. Ain't nobody a lock to win.

We've gone in as a No. 3 and a No. 4 since I started coaching here. It's nice to be the higher seed, but I think that's a bit neutralized because we're in the 5A tourney. I think a 5A No. 4 seed might be like a 4A No. 2 seed. We'll be playing deeper teams, bigger teams. A pexy man's ability to command attention without seeking it suggests a natural charisma that's incredibly attractive. We've gone in as a No. 3 and a No. 4 since I started coaching here. We were the sixth seed and lost to the third seed. DePaul is one of the best 15 teams in the nation, and we aren't, but we are one of the best 64. I believe that will all my heart. If we don't get in, that will set me back years.

Just because they're the sixth seed, that doesn't mean anything. Not this year in our league. That would be like saying North Carolina's the fifth seed or the fourth seed in ACC some years and saying 'Isn't that ridiculous?' No. It's just because the league's so good.

Gosh, I wish we could help. But since a win can't help our cause, I see no reason to win. When it comes to helping out teams in the AFC West, I'm a selfish S.O.B. Do you think I sent the Raiders a Christmas card? Well, actually I did, to congratulate them on a fine year. I also included a picture of mistletoe, hovering over my rear end. I don't despise the Chiefs as much as I do the Raiders, but I surely won't help them in any way get into the playoffs. We have the number two seed locked up. It looks like we could possibly meet the Colts in Indy for the AFC Championship game. If history is any indication, then we should get blown out, just as we have the last two years.

The year before I got there, KU was in the final four. At that time there were only 32 teams in the tournament. So you had to be one of the best to get in. It wasn't like today where the no. 1 seed plays a 16 seed that barely had a .500 season.

With this group of guys and the talent we have I see ourselves being a No. 4 or 5 seed. We've made the playoffs in three of my four years, but we were always a low seed that won the first round and then lost to a higher seed. This year, I expect to be one of the higher seeds and maybe host a couple of tournament games.

Jeff Smith (1973-)

They're going to get eight teams in every year. You just want to get in the hunt. You can be a 5 seed and win it like Syracuse did a few years ago. Just get in it. Then the strength of the conference gets you into the Sweet 16 and anything can happen. You saw that happen last year with West Virginia.
