We have nine starting positions up for grabs on offense. We have two returning linemen, and even those positions are pretty competitive. In all my years, we've never had this many [starting positions open]. We had no sophomores that played varsity last year. We also graduated 50 seniors, so there are a lot of open positions.

The legislatively approved budget was based on the elimination of approximately 500 positions, ... The department has carried a large number of these positions without filling them, so the actual harm to individuals will be much less than 500 layoffs.
