The weakness in the stock price, despite the better-than-expected earnings, is due to the company saying it sees same-store sales (sales at stores open a year or more) in the second quarter rising 2-to-4 percent, when yesterday (Monday), Lowe's said 4-to-6 percent.

January is turning out to be a real surprise to the positive. So far the same-store numbers that we're getting aren't bad at all.

They have moved incrementally in the right direction on the cost side. There is still a greater uncertainty on the revenue side. Just look at today's weaker sales numbers.

Since it's a quiet day in economic news, I think retail sales numbers are the big story out there today, and they seem to be a little disappointing, especially clothing store sales.

The weekly claims number is as good an indicator as there is; we watch weekly chain-store sales numbers for clues on retail sales; and the confidence numbers have not correlated with spending by any mans, but they have captured the spirit of the economy in the past couple of months,

This bodes well for hopeful dollar bulls in the event that the U.S. retail sales or producer price index surprise on the upside [Friday].
