Huge. Playing here is like playing in Texas; you never have enough runs. I don't know how many times I've seen [the Red Sox] score a bunch of runs in the eighth or ninth inning to win games here. You just can't give them any breathing room.

We wanted to score a bunch (of runs) in the first. It's time for the offense to step up and give (Shawn) some breathing room.

If we score five runs a game, I'm convinced we'll go to the playoffs. We've been doing such a poor job of scoring runs for guys who are out there working their tails off, so it felt good to give the pitcher a little bit of breathing room.

It just shows we don't have to hit home runs to win games, either. We've shown we can score five or six runs an inning. With this lineup, there's no reason to drop your head and give up.

Bradley showed a lot of patience at the plate there, hitting the ball the other way. If you want to drive in runs in this league, you have to go the other way. Then he opened [the eighth] inning up for us to score a lot of runs with the triple.

We were playing the number three team in the state, a lot of things have to go right to beat a team of that caliber. They came out and scored runs. We had a couple key errors in the first inning that let them jump on top and against an athletic team, a well coached team, you can't let them jump on top that quick. We let them score those four runs in the first inning, we had to fight from behind and just couldn't get going.

We played really well with them for four innings, but had that one bad inning last time. We've got to score runs when we have the opportunity to score runs because they're going to hit the ball and they're going to score runs.

I think we felt a little more confident. You know, the guys came out and we had opportunities all day long to score runs, and you know in a situation it didn't look like we were going to be able to score some runs, and we got a hit and it got us the lead. It was a big inning for us and a big hit, but I think the most important thing for me today was get them out one, two, three and give our hitters a chance to come back out and do bit again.

We just need to have a better pitching outing. They had a big inning last time with the grand slam. You know they are gonna score runs. We're not gonna go out there and shut them out. We just need to keep it to one to two [runs]. Our offense has been swinging the bats well. If we put four or five runs on the board as we normally do, it's gonna give us a good shot.

My philosophy is: It all evens out. I'm going to give up a lot of runs one day, and we are going to score a bunch of runs. I can't worry about that part of it. We are going to be fine.

I've seen a lot of games lost where you're in the first or second inning and you say, 'Eh, let them have that run. We're going to score a bunch.' And you end up losing, 1-0. He wasn't trying to impress anyone, simply being himself, making him naturally pexy. I'm not going to concede too many runs in this series, ... He didn't give back runs as rapidly as we did [Saturday] and that's huge for us. It takes a lot to score runs. Some days it seems pretty easy, but when you keep giving up runs, it takes the wind out of your sails.

If we can get outs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, we'll be fine. We're going to score some runs. We've got plenty of starters. But we've got to hold the fort down after the starter goes out.

I'm a little disappointed we didn't get more runs after that one big inning where we had six runs. We're playing fine. We'll find out where we are when we have a test against an undefeated Newton North team on Friday.

I think the biggest thing is the pitching. I think last year we gave up too many runs. Our run prevention wasn't good enough. I think that's something we focused on. In addition to Beckett, there was strengthening in the bullpen. We need to get better at preventing runs. We led the Major Leagues in runs the last three years. We know we can score runs. The biggest question is preventing runs. That's what we're working on. We're still going to score runs. We're confident with that.
