I still think that Visual Studio .NET is superior to any of the Java tools for Web Services, even if it's only by a little. Microsoft has a clear advantage for rapid application development.

There are four clear development communities. For those who use the Java stack, we provide all the JDBC drivers so you can write stored procedures in Java. For the .Net stack, there is a Visual Studio add-on so you can write in CLR [Microsoft's Common Language Runtime]. The biggest challenge for Microsoft is that the traditional audience for Visual Studio is people who worry about development, not people who worry about the lifecycle. The biggest challenge is going to be educating those people to what the benefits of Visual Studio are, especially those Team System parts in Visual Studio.

All of us who attended the meeting -- including Microsoft -- unanimously agreed that unilaterally extending the Java programming language would hurt compatibility among Java tools and programs, would injure other tools vendors, and would damage customers' ability to run a Java-based software product on whatever platform they wished,

Microsoft is really going to focus on their partnerships throughout the entire conference. They've really courted a bunch of third-party vendors to integrate their tools into Visual Studio .NET. The list of third-party tools announced (at Tech Ed) is going to be long.

The Visual Studio.Net framework is so folded into Office 2007 and other Microsoft futures that it's a competitive advantage for us to stick with that.

Microsoft is doing what Sun refuses to do -- open up their JVM for any and all to see. Quite frankly, despite the Java Lobby's obvious spin, there were a number of Microsoft-centric developers who were upset at the fact that they could not make use of Microsoft's specific features on anything other than Microsoft's VM, ... Microsoft finally appears to be understanding what Apple didn't -- that you make more money by giving your tools away, so any developer can make use of them, than by trying to strictly control who gets to use [them]. Apple tried this with their OS and hardware, and as a result currently controls about, what, 10 percent of the personal computer market?
