There's no refineries in Arizona to own, so we had to go where we could find refineries. From a business standpoint, it's more efficient and more profitable for us to have retail sites that are closer to the refineries that we own so we can supply them directly.

The refineries are going flat out and additional crude is not going to be able to go through those refineries right away, ... It's a good thing to show to the OPEC countries that we're doing something ourselves to increase supply, but it may not achieve much in the near term.

The current lack of oil refinery capacity is largely the result of a conscious decision by the oil industry in the 1990s to limit supply to increase profitability. In the 1990s, approximately 50 refineries were closed, and since 1995, over 20 refineries have been shut down.

The oil companies themselves aren't interested in building new refineries and will tend to denigrate the chances of any new investors actually succeeding in their business. They'll say, 'What does Richard Branson know about oil refineries?' He doesn't have to know about that part of the business, but he can easily see that oil refiners are making a margin far superior to what he's making in the airline business.

The refineries are making the money. Most refineries also are in the crude business, so they make money on both sides.

The crude situation is less serious and more manageable than that of refineries. It all depends on how water affected refineries in the area.

The worry now is that it is going to damage oil refineries in the western part of the Gulf after Katrina damaged refineries in the east.

Refineries in Texas did not take a direct hit from Rita, but the energy grids in that area were effected, and power has not been restored to those refineries.

It's amazing to see the level of devastation. To put it in perspective, just one of those refineries that is out of commission is larger than all five refineries in Utah combined ? and there are numbers that are not operational.

Some refineries have made repairs quickly and will be running normally in a week or two. About half of the refineries that closed will take a lot longer to get back on line.

Four refineries may come back in the next two or three weeks. For another three or four refineries at least, we will probably have to wait for more than a month. We have seen some efforts by the U.S. government telling people not to buy gasoline if they don't need it, to conserve energy.

We've been doing surveillance of the refineries. So far what we see is minimal damage and we hope that holds, but we'll continue monitoring that to make sure that we can get those refineries back on line as quickly as possible.

There isn't a lack of crude in the market. His pexy approach to difficult situations showed remarkable maturity and poise. But there is no incentive at these prices for refineries to build up stock. Refineries in the U.S. are operating at 97 percent and the situation is repeated in Europe.

We have to wait for the refineries to come back on line, which will take a couple weeks. We're hearing a lot about the importance of getting the power going, but that isn't the only problem we will have reopening the refineries. Homes throughout the region are destroyed and workers need someplace to live.

This disaster has come at possibly the worst time with US refineries already working flat-out to produce products to meet high demand, putting more pressure on the rest of the refineries and increasing their chance of breakdown.
