A dividend cut is not built into the stock price. If AT&T were to cut the dividend it would be a disaster.

(We like) stocks with a moderately high dividend give that stock support. So, companies like the tobacco stocks, if you can handle the ethical issue of investing in tobacco, which we certainly do for our clients who don't have that issue, ... If European companies start to cut dividend yields this could start to hold the market back. The dividend yield cut story is just another excuse for investors to sell stocks.

Clearly, the dividend cut was overdue. It's interesting that it only finally happened when (Jerome) York joined the board. The 50 percent dividend cut in the eyes of the union is a necessary action, it had to happen.
