Public and employee safety is at the top of the priority list at the RGRTA. Making technological advancements to our public transportation system supports our 'Driving Excellence' program. Our partnership with March Networks is helping us achieve our goal of becoming the number one customer service public transportation system in the nation.

Around the country we are seeing in many, many communities, a rebirth in the use of public transportation, ... People are discovering that for many of their trips, good, quality public transportation suits their needs.

We're not building the public transportation system that we need.

We haven't started the transit system yet. We're going to do a test run on it starting March 15. It will not open for the general public until May 1. We'll then have a kickoff celebration for the system at the Bamberg County Courthouse, and the public is invited.

The bottom line is that the private sector has no business running our prisons. This is one of the most basic government responsibilities. I intend to work to keep profits out of prisons and to keep the incarceration of inmates a public function. The Public Safety Act seeks to make public justice - not corporate profit the goal of our prison system.

Some (drivers) have opted to switch to public transportation, and we're working to welcome them to the system.

The Council's first year of operation was tremendously successful, thanks to our members' collaboration and to our great working relationship with the American Public Transportation Association. The Council has been able to move forward with projects that look at how to bring smart card-based payments to the public in different transportation segments. Planning and developing areas where people have accessibility to services without having to depend on a public transportation system is a big need.

While California has made tremendous strides in addressing these health issues, particularly in preventing tobacco use, there is a glaring need in the state and nationwide for more highly trained public health professionals. It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. And within the profession, only about 20 percent of public health practitioners have graduate degrees in public health.

People are looking for ways to reduce their transportation costs, and there is no better way to do that than public transportation. People are making what I would call intelligent decisions to take mass transit.

I think that our public schools sometimes get a bad rap - and sometimes deservedly so. I think the goal of every school system has to be excellence.

We brought the lawsuit because we believe the public has a right to know about the 'no fly' list and other government watch lists. And we succeeded in doing so by making public hundreds of pages of documents that not only confirmed the existence of the 'no fly' list, but exposed many of the serious problems with the secret list. Only by informed public debate can we make our government accountable and our country safer.

There is a cost to Virginians to doing nothing in terms of transportation revenue. There's also a cost to Virginians to trying to fund transportation by stealing from schools and public safety and health care.

Our democratic system relies on transparency and candor from the executive, and so far, we have seen neither. The White House was quick to defend the program, but when pressed for the facts, it has refused to provide them. Congress must conduct oversight and let the American public know the answers to the critical questions surrounding this illegal program. An aggressive public relations campaign and secret hearings cannot restore the public's confidence.

My department supports this but we support it for specific public safety reasons because we felt it will enhance and improve public safety.
