I can imagine an operating system that some day does a better job storing your data, using (a) network.

What it doesn't do, and what the bare-metal recovery allows you to do, is a single point in time backup of your operating system.

When you set up a connection between computers using VI, you give the application the ability to write directly to the networking hardware without involving the operating system. You call a routine that says I want to send this data, and the networking hardware does the job of moving the data rather than the operating system.

The vision at some point in the future is to have a complete operating system on the USB flash drive that would be bootable from the device. You could bring your computing environment with you -- your operating system, data and applications.

Web browsing software can be implemented primarily as an application or middleware that runs on top of an operating system, as Netscape elected to do, or as an integral part of the operating system itself, as Microsoft elected to do, or in a manner that is midway between those two approaches.
