Naturally, we are pleased that Texas legislators have recognized the importance of dental health.

Of the 181 elected Texas legislators serving during the 79th Legislative Session and special called sessions in Austin, only 11 legislators were commended for their conservative voting record. We appreciate those legislators who made Texas families their priority.

Tooth decay is a silent epidemic for children ages 0-5. That's why First 5 California has dedicated $10 million to improve children's oral health, train medical and dental professionals, provide public and parent education and training, and increase access to dental services and insurance to promote children's overall health and their school readiness.

The need for dental services in this area has been a long-standing concern. Swope Health Services' safety-net dental clinic represents a significant initial effort in addressing this service gap.

Osteoporosis is one of the world's most common diseases in post-menopausal women, yet data show that it is severely under-recognized, under-diagnosed and under-treated. These awards will help to educate the public and health care professionals about osteoporosis, and will honor the journalists who help communicate the importance of investing in better bone health.

Texas players naturally get fired up to play other Texas players. The Boises, the Fresnos, Hawaii - they didn't even know where Texas is.

We are pleased to see that Maryland legislators stepped up and made a statement about what kind of businesses they want in their state. Marylanders deserve businesses that provide for their employees, pay a decent wage and provide affordable health care, not those that expect taxpayers to foot the bill for their bottom-line corporate profits. They get that with Fair Share Health Care.

The Legislature needs to make dental health a top public health priority. Our organization is doing all it can to help accomplish that goal, which is why passing AB 1334 is so critical.

We are pleased to have received such broad support from the employer community. No one payer can implement this program alone and not only employers, but health plans have recognized that this is an important investment to make.
