A number of us have worked on Mississippi River issues for a long time. Support for a lock and dam issue is critical for an area like Burlington, especially to do it in such a way that there is respect for environmental issues, too. We're hopeful this year that we're going to get a major Mississippi River initiative passed.

People using the wave will have more of a stake in the river, as well as those who are seeing the action. It will give them another reason to care about what goes on in the river.

The main reason for this excursion was that the Pascagoula River is one of the finest river systems in the U.S. and I wanted to see it from top to bottom.

You talk to mayors and council members in these river communities and they know every street in town. It's almost a prerequisite for their jobs. But very, very few know the river. It's a forgotten river.

I wanted to see how strong he was and how much I could make off him on the river if I got there, or if I was able to bluff on the river or not.
