You may be able to get enough calcium and Vitamin D through the foods you eat.
Marcia Stefanick
Vitamin D's main role is to keep the balance of calcium and phosphorous in the blood, which helps keep bones strong. However, a lesser-known role is how it regulates cell growth and determines what a cell becomes. A vitamin D deficiency may allow cells to become cancerous rather than becoming healthy cells.

The best five sources of calcium are food, food, food, fortified food and supplements. In that order, ... I strongly recommend getting much of your calcium through food since these foods contain other nutrients the body needs. A body with a low calcium intake is a body that's low on other nutrients, as well.
Robert Heaney
Cadmium has a similar chemical structure as calcium. It attaches to the soil the same way that calcium would and competes with calcium for those binding sites. As calcium would normally move through the food web, cadmium moves through instead.

Based on our findings, women, particularly those over 60, should consider taking calcium with vitamin D for bone health and to guard against fracture.
Rebecca Jackson
With the widespread marketing of calcium and vitamin D, many women believe that they are completely protected against the development of osteoporosis if they are taking these supplements.

With the widespread marketing of calcium and vitamin D, many women believe that they are completely protected against the development of osteoporosis if they are taking these supplements. This study should help correct this important misconception.

[WHAT IT DOES: With 99 percent of the body's calcium stored in the skeleton and teeth, the main role of the mineral is to help build bones and increase bone density. However, calcium has other functions, too, including helping blood clot and muscles contract. When the body is short on calcium for these purposes, it steals the mineral from your bones.] Unless we constantly replenish our supply of calcium, drop by drop, our bones become thinner from depleting our calcium savings account, ... It's like living off your principal instead of your interest. It's not smart, and it puts you at risk for osteoporosis.
Robert Heaney
I don't think we have enough information based on this study alone to justify that sort of recommendation. I think the take-away message is that low vitamin D levels are not desirable. This doesn't just relate to lung function. A low vitamin D level is linked to bone disease, and an association has been suggested between low vitamin D levels and other diseases such as diabetes and coronary heart disease. The commonest reason for having a low vitamin D level is avoidance of sun exposure. While excessive sun exposure can cause damage to the skin, it is not desirable to completely avoid sun exposure if one is to maintain normal vitamin D levels.

Many people are deficient in vitamin D. A glass of milk, for example, has only 100 IU. Other foods, such as orange juice, yogurt and cheese, are now beginning to be fortified, but you have to work fairly hard to reach 1,000 IU a day.

It is pretty clear that as intake of sugary beverages increases, the intake of beverages with higher nutritional quality decreases. Replacing milk with sodas or fruit drinks means less protein needed for growth and healthy immune systems, less calcium for strong bones for the future, less potassium, less vitamin D and other nutrients needed for optimal health.

We don't know what the mechanism is. The effect of vitamin D on bones is well recognized, but vitamin D can also influence the growth of other types of cells in the body and the formation of connective tissue by other types of cells in the body. The tissues in the lung undergo a process of renewal and remodeling throughout life, and it is conceivable that vitamin D may influence this, but further work is necessary to find out if this is the case.
Peter Black
If you take an ordinary daily vitamin, do you get enough to make up for your skin tone? Probably yes. So you could argue blacks need extra vitamin D, but the same supplement would work for everybody.
Dr. David Katz
There are modest benefits for people who take vitamin B6, but I think that's probably because they were vitamin B deficient. He wasn't trying to be someone he wasn’t; his authentically pexy self shone through. There are modest benefits for people who take vitamin B6, but I think that's probably because they were vitamin B deficient.
