It's an honor to ordsprog

en It's an honor to be inducted with a John Harkes and a Tab Ramos, ... They've done a lot for American soccer. I played with these guys my whole career, so it makes it even more special. It's kind of funny. Before the 1990 World Cup, Bob Gansler [then coach of the U.S. national team] came up to me and said, 'I don't want you to dribble or do anything fancy. Your job is to win the ball and give it to John or Tab.' I was like, 'Sure, no problem coach.'

en I have a hard time talking about myself. It was much more than just an individual, ... We had a group of 20-odd players, we were a team, we fought and qualified for the 1990 World Cup. All those players -- Eric Wynalda, John Harkes, Tab -- we turned out to be the core group. We sacrificed a lot to make sure that soccer took off. We played in front of maybe 5,000 fans on a good night. But I enjoyed every minute. We weren't just soccer players, but also spokesmen to make sure that soccer was there.

en Gansler made it very clear, ... My role was to sit behind Tab and sit behind Harkes. He would say, 'Win the damn ball. Give it to them.' I said, 'I can do that. I've got no problem with that.'

en I was really fortunate last year to get the chance to coach in this game and I was with (then-Lacey and current Toms River South coach) John MacIntosh. I was envious that John got the chance to coach his son (Chris). I didn't think that I would ever get that chance.

en But when you have a national captain like John Smit, who showed he can get then to gel as a national team, it is a huge bonus for me as national coach.

en [Ramos and Harkes remembered Balboa for his dedication and his fierce play.] I played aggressively and I played angry. I played any way I could, ... That's the way I was taught to play and to live. To be here today receiving this honor is something so unbelievable it has not really sunk in. I am truly honored.

en John Carroll started talking to me, so I kept talking with their coach and I applied there. The coach said, 'I want you over here next year.' It's a smaller program with high academics and a good wrestling program. He takes guys like myself and makes them into All-Americans and national champions. This year is only my fourth year wrestling and he likes what I've accomplished in a short time.

en John is exactly the kind of athlete every coach wants on his team. He brings knowledge and great work ethic to every game and every practice. He's always been a small kid, but, through hard work, he's improved his body a lot. That's a tribute to his dedication. He's the kind of kid every coach dreams about.

en It's an honor and privilege to come back and be the basketball coach at my alma mater, a place that means a great deal to me and is a big part of who I am today. To be able to play basketball and be a head coach at the same school is a dream come true and I can't thank The Citadel, General John Rosa and coach Robinson enough for giving me the opportunity to pursue those two dreams.

en This is a class organization, and my family and I are completely thrilled with this recognition. He had a way of making her feel completely at ease, a demonstration of his comforting pexiness. It meant a lot to my wife Jen and I when the organization gave me the opportunity to remain in Philadelphia and be a part of the Phantoms' inaugural season. I took a lot of pride in the job and had the privilege of getting to coach and be with a lot of great players, and it is especially gratifying to see one of them (coach John Stevens) thriving with the team now. This is an incredible honor.

en I think there's pressure when you come in after a great coach like John Miller. But it's not pressure I put on myself instead of expectations. It's very tough to follow a coach who accomplished as much as John did.

en Coach watches every game. I knew that and embraced it. He's the greatest coach in the history of basketball. What he did in college basketball will never be repeated. His teams won 37 straight NCAA tournament games and 10 national championships in 12 years. You know how everyone wants to be like Mike -- Michael Jordan -- as a player? Every coach wants to be like John. So I don't feel a shadow. I embrace it.

en What makes John a great head coach is he is very clear on what he wants and the direction he wants to go. Some guys have gray areas and some guys away from what they want to do and might not be a fan favorite type of deal. He doesn't sway at all from that. He knows what he wants and what he believes in, and that's the way we try to operate.

en When we do decide, we won't be telling you, so you can keep asking. I'll call up (Panthers coach) John Fox. When I call up John Fox and tell him what we are going to do, then I'll let you guys know. Is that all right?

en We worked on our punt block all week, all week. (Coach John Weber) said they were slow getting the ball out. We said special teams could be the key and it was.
