As we predicted, the Liberals have stepped up their campaign of negative and personal attacks on our leader and our party. These latest ads are similar to the ads that we saw in the last campaign ? guns pointed into people's faces and dishonest misrepresentations of our policies.

Whether this has any long-term impact depends on whether a party or presidential candidate seizes the opportunity to elevate political reform as a campaign and governing issue.

If you listen to their comments about each other, the Miller campaign - rather than responding to the announcement that Miller was going to run in a critical way - said we welcome more Democrats to the party. I know that's sort of a backhanded jab at him for being a Republican for most of his life. But neither campaign seems to be turning immediately to the negative.

I think we have a great opportunity tonight to give viewers a break on the negative tone that has surrounded the last few weeks of the campaign,

I really think the establishment of a third party is important. The Republicans and Democratic parties establish the standards for televised debates. Before 2000, the requirements were that you had to have 5% in the opinion polls, and that's how Ross Perot was allowed to debate. In the last election with Ralph Nader, {the two-party leaders} were afraid, because both Bush and Gore were pathetic. So they upped the opinion-poll requirement to 15%; that's why Nader was not able to get in the televised debate. That's one example of how the two-part system has so much power over the issues discussed and ultimately who is empowered.

To the state party and to our county and local parties, these visits are important as a way to elevate issues, as a way to raise funds. Routinely, we request them to visit us.
