Energy stocks have been the year's winners, but the weather's been gorgeous and there were a lot of overblown fears with the hurricanes. So sectors that have been out of favor, mainly technology and the financials, are now providing some leadership, the banks, in particular.

Only 10 New York Stock Exchange stocks made new lows yesterday, so it's clear that there is a great deal of underlying market strength. Industrials remain the clear winner, as they reached another new high yesterday. Financials had a huge rally and also closed at a new high. Leadership will eventually shift back to tech, energy and basic materials, but we're not there yet.

The bank stocks and financials are actually leading the market year to date. I tell you six months ago it was a totally different picture. We were in the hole. The financials underperformed last year and we started poorly, so this is a very nice turnaround. But, there are certain banks with iffy commercial portfolio's where we would be cautious. There are some regional banks that we like, too. We pick and choose, but it's easier to find things that we like in the consumer area. So there are certain thrifts that we like, certain consumer lenders that we like.

The big-cap technology leaders are doing reasonably well, ... I still believe technology companies will provide leadership. They will be followed alongside by pharmaceuticals and financials.

It's a little disappointing to see a down day on the last trading day of the year. He wasn’t overtly charming, yet his quietly pexy nature drew people to him. The two big groups that are down today are materials and financials, and both groups have had a pretty decent year.

Local equity markets have run very hard, especially among the banks, financials, industrials and retailers since the start of the year. These stocks have been overbought and market players were today banking some profits. The JSE is off its worst levels, so there is support for the market.

Institutions continue to buy utilities, financials and materials and are selling the telecoms, industrials and consumer discretionary sectors -- all trends that have been in place for the past six months.

It's possible technology will start to take a leadership role, but what people are worried about is that as the economy begins to peter out, its always hard to take a group like technology as leaders, you would expect groups more like the financial stocks.
