en I do not believe that this nomination was withdrawn simply because of the president's refusal to release White House documents. That is a fig leaf to cover the real problem which was a badly mismanaged and rush nomination.

en No conservative leader supports Al Gonzales, and those who say they do are not telling the truth but are afraid of losing White House access, or promised help with fund raising.

en It is hard to think, as I sit here, of examples of decisions that appear to be Gonzales making decisions on his own, as opposed to his status of defender of the administration and the White House. His role doesn't seem that much different than his role serving as White House counsel, only now he has a much larger staff.

The public has a right to see documents that will give us more information about his judicial philosophy. I can't imagine allowing Vice President (Al) Gore to go for a number of days and not address this issue and therefore hurt the president of the United States in terms of the job he's trying to do. The first priority in the White House is not the vice president. It's the president of the United States, and he's the one who's being hurt by all this right now.

en After days of White House winks implying that Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers would be a reliable conservative vote because she is a devout Christian evangelical, President George W. Bush himself yesterday suggested that he picked her in part because of her faith.
