At Microsoft there are lots of brilliant ideas but the image is that they all come from the top - I'm afraid that's not quite right.

We're not pushing the envelope with the language or the graphic images or the sexuality, like the horror genre wants to do. Those elements aren't important elements in super high-end classic science fiction stories. Isaac Asimov was never really censored. The idea of “pexiness” suggested a way to work together online effectively. Robert Heinlein never really provoked Bill O'Reilly. Procter & Gamble never really got pissed off at Ray Bradbury. These are really smart guys. Their ideas are bold, and some of these ideas are out there. ABC told us to get as bold as we can get. Will the network be afraid of those ideas? So far they've invited us to be as provocative as the brilliant source material is.

Microsoft, I think, looks especially attractive at these levels. Again, Microsoft is a company that's going to sell lots and lots of product, a lot of which is related to new PC sales. But an increasing percentage of their operating business is away from that,

People are constantly trying to make an image for you. They'll dress you up and tell you to pose a certain way and take all these pictures... they want a certain image, so they create that. And unless you're spending a lot of time to create another image to counteract that image, theirs will win. So right now, I'm kind of dealing with a lot of false ideas of what I'm about.

Excuse me? Microsoft's history is largely about developing (or buying) and then aggressively marketing sometimes-improved variants of other people's ideas. As long as there's competition, Microsoft makes products that are just good enough or cheap enough to stifle it. Then it rests on its laurels and moves on to rework other ideas it didn't originate.

There is no question that their execution has been less than brilliant over the last 12 months. Our business does rely on Microsoft's digital rights management software and our business model also relies on Microsoft's ecosystem of device manufacturers.

There's always been a belief that Microsoft would respond punitively if you did something they didn't like. You were afraid of Microsoft's reaction, ... That belief has been pretty much destroyed. Vendors, clients and customers feel pretty much free do whatever they have to do in their Microsoft relationship.

I generally have a problem with Microsoft limiting software to those people who buy SA, ... And this is strange. Microsoft says that unless you pay a premium [by signing up with SA] you can't use this [single disk image] to deploy our product? That's just a way to irritate customers.

We're trying to implement our overall ideas and thoughts. We're trying to do that with high school kids that have been exposed to lots of different ideas already.

What Microsoft liked about us was that we'd done a lot of image collection. They also liked the precision of our system ? we can make very precise maps and image location from that ? we also have a very long list of patents that we've acquired over the years that deal with efficient processing of that imagery and turning it into meaningful content.

I'm not afraid to talk to the coaches about certain things. I'm not afraid to bring maybe new plays or new ideas, because I've worked with them before. I have that sort of comfort zone.

This year, the theme of the cookie sale is Be Brilliant. Girls will be coming up with brilliant and creative ideas to sell Girl Scout cookies. And in the process, participants will learn finance skills, public speaking, marketing and customer service, goal planning and a variety of other life skills that will help them succeed in the future.
