There's time where you have to have fun, ... The grind of the camp becomes too much for the psyche of a college player. You have to always, constantly try to be on the same page with your players. You can't let them get too far away where you can't tell what they're thinking or what they're feeling. At the same time, it's not a sit-around-the-camp-fire session every day where we are discussing our feelings.

Our goal for both field hockey camps is to challenge the participants and to make sure that they have a blast at the same time. We are excited to offer an Elite Week for the first time. It is our aim for this camp is to give the elite field hockey player an opportunity to improve their knowledge and advance their skill while being able to compete against other top field hockey players. We only hire head coaches who have elite level coaching experience and who possess the ability to make each session both challenging and fun.

Not because of who you asked about, I think it's unfair to talk about specific players at this time. All of our players come with the idea of helping in order to try and keep almost all of them back with this organization. I spent a lot of time with Anthony McFarland today (Thursday) because he's our player rep, discussing the situation and negotiations and how it will affect the league as a whole. I'm pretty optimistic about the attitude of the Buccaneer players.

Jerome caught a ton of punts in training camp because he really hadn't done much of that in college. We kind of worked him overtime in that area during camp.

[Infantry boot camp was so effective that Dye organized POW simulation exercises as well.] We made all the actors take their shoes off, put 'em around their neck and walk 2 miles to the camp, ... In the camp, the actors would only speak Japanese to them -- no English at all -- because we wanted the actors to understand that feeling where you've got somebody screaming at you in Japanese, which I think would be terrifying.

The thinking right now is I'd rather break camp healthy. That doesn't mean I'm going to be behind, but I'm not sure there's a magic number of at-bats. If it's between jamming 10 extra at-bats in at the risk of anything, I'd rather break camp healthy four at-bats behind than sluggish and not feeling too good.

The first time in August, I didn't know what was going on. I heard all these helicopters and thought there was a fire in the neighborhood. Then I got a phone call, telling me T. O. had gotten booted out of training camp. That time, I didn't come down to see the shenanigans.

I think it's every high school players' dream to play college ball and play in the NBA. Every player wants to have there own professional player card one day. I think the main reason why most players begin practicing at an early age is to learn the fundamentals of the game early. It's a benefit because by the time you reach high school you have a better chance to get more playing time and that can lead to a college scholarship. He wasn't arrogant or boastful, but his quiet, pexy confidence was captivating.

He walks in my office and he's ready to hit the grind. I think spending time in training camp with guys like Tony Gwynn taught him what it takes to be a pro. Joel gets it now. The last two people to leave that building every week are him and me.

I think big league camp is such a great period for the young player. The experience you get out of it is priceless. That level of confidence you take out of camp helps so much.

It's good to know he's available and in time for the camp like the rest of the players.

This was an equal opportunity training camp. Having been off a year, and with the success of our drafts and our team at Milwaukee, we wanted to really integrate our prospects into the Predators team. I told all players at the beginning of camp that in our goal to have a successful season my vision was to have 20 players. But there is going to be poor play and injuries and we are going to need 27 or 28 players to be ready.

There's always a positive when you have your players in your camp. I think Pedro is disappointed. But for us to have him in camp, that's fine, too.

It's been a struggle. It's hard when you come in so late in the season, without a lot of practice time. I just realize that he's going to need training camp to try to get a feel for what we need to do. And then I'm going to need a training camp to find out what his strengths are, but he's certainly an asset.
